11Jan12

Welcome to 2012! Beth, Lynnea and Tracie ring in the new year with talk about: Plan B, Jessica Ahlquist's lawsuit win, Texas ultrasound law, Transgender issues in the Girl Scouts, Sexism in the atheist movement and our MAJOR award. :)

Rancid secretions… I’m stealing that as a name for my death metal band.

Tim Tebow is an idiot. Apple trees are awesome, so pretty and tasty fruit. Basketball bores the hell out of me, but I can vaguely see the appeal.

Re: Mixed dorms….Um…bit of an assumption that no sex would happen in all female or all male dorms? Ummmm…… A bit surprised a secular camp would assume all the kids are heterosexual. Im sure some of the gay boys would be more comfy in the boys rooms too. I went to Catholic school and my gal buddy and I looked a bit too suspiciously lesbian, so we werent allowed in the same room on camps. Funny, the catholic nuns werent as naive about that kinda diversity in teen sexuality :-) LOVE the show by the way!!

Woops…..I meant some of the gay boys maybe more comfy in the girls rooms…..

And we’ll just let all bisexuals get single rooms?

Thank you for a good show, although I missed Jen.

The only thing sadder than your subject matter in this show was the variable sound level.

Regarding the TX ultrasound/sonogram law: an invasive transvaginal ultrasound would be required during the window of time in which a pregnancy can be ended with medication.

Conga rats on the award! That award list is how I found you, so here’s also a “thanks” to everyone who voted you on to it. I’m enjoying the podcasts; keep up the good work Beth, Jen, Tracie, Lynnea - an hour and ~half of Godless Bitches takes me to and from work one and ~half times!

Welcome back! I missed you. Loved the episode, especially the part when Tracie got choked up because at one point in her life she was prejudiced towards fat people. Hearing the pain in her voice just affirmed what a good person she is, and showed how good people get to be good people, through introspection and a determination to change. I just wanted to hug you Trace, you are a good sweet person without help from an imaginary dude in the sky. Also, I’m glad to hear others are outraged about the plan B thing, thanks all, but especially Beth for the rant. Your fan in western PA, Drew. Oh- please announce whenever GBs are up for an award, I would like to vote for my favorite atheist podcast.

Another reason it is especially important to convert as many women as possible to atheism is because although they are usually the biggest victims of religion, they are also the biggest propagator of it too. Usually they are ones that make sure the family goes to church and participate in religious activities.

I once posted that it would be interesting to have callers like AE. I was totally wrong. Callers would significantly detract from the power of the show. It is so engaging, that I play a podcast as background music when people visit me. Thanks so much

Sigh, the downside of first-name handle convention…

I’ve been silently downloading directly off the feed. Came by to say “Welcome back! Your enjoyable, thought-provoking show was missed by yet another admirer.”

If people wanna have sex, no room arrangement will help. So if parents are that concerdned they should just demand chaperones. xD And Tracy 3 cm love it!

I accidentally goggled “rancid secretions” instead of “Santorum” Turns out the two may be connected.

I love the way Beth talks….lol…she has no filter and it’s refreshing. I get so dissapointed with Obama still straddling the fence.

It’s BS, I did not change my mind ( and I knew the stage ), and if they had taken any bio class in their life, they should known the stages of fetal developement. The waiting 24 hours after the fact is BS. And the darn heartbeat does not change the fact that you can’t take care of a baby, these women are just saving face to what ever A hole had them cornered. They ( here in Texas ) already made you wait 3 days out for the appointment and they do give you the option to view the ultrasound, then and there, as well as, they give you the weeks, because past a certain stage 12 week I believe is more costs due a little more complication of the procedure ( aka. for health reasons ). Most abortions are done within the first trimester, a time were natural abortion ( or miscarraige ) usually occurs.

hello ladies , just wondering why does the show always have to be so negitive, always abortion , discrimanation against gays , anti prayer stuff in schools , cant it be happy atheist things , thats how i present my atheist beliefs to everyone here and , the christians dont hate me , or most of them dont anyways, not saying that those issues are not important, its just its seems that the shows AE,NP,your show seem so dark and depressing , im going to still listen and watch , im just saying , cant yall just be happier.

Please, please, PLEASE don’t limit your shows to “happy atheist things” for a misguided effort to not make any waves. I like your show very much as it is. Thank you, ladies.

I second Hellbound Alleee’s opinion. Positive stories would be great once in a while, but I’m loving the education. Stimulating conversation with an atheist/feminist bent. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! Thanks for everything. I look forward to the podcast every week. Cheers!

If you actually wanted to know what I was saying you could have just asked. My contact info is readily available, and I am very easy to find. It seems what you actually wanted to do was tell people what I was saying…which you did poorly and inaccurately.

Great job with the intellectual curiosity there.

In the future I am perfectly happy to provide clarification to anyone who would like it.

    Thanks.

actually, I’ve listened further, you’ve been fairly fair, but the context in which this letter was framed for you skewed the message I intended. It has become irritating to see the main point of my letter overlooked over and over again.

the offer remains, if anyone cares, and wants to ask questions. Find me and ask.

I don’t understand how we as a society can ever *get* to a better world without addressing things that stand as obstacles to that happier future– and yes, this includes speaking up about gay rights, reproductive rights, imposed prayer in schools, and the like.

Trying to put on the ol’ “atheist happy face” to make our message appear more palatable is weak sauce– it’s like the theist who deliberately ignores the obnoxious and vile aspects of their dogma to better promote the religious message under the all-encompassing label.

@Mallorie– context, please. What are you responding to?

I believe Mallorie was the author of the letter that the GBs picked through in this episode. It came across as though she was trying to separate herself from other atheist women by being more “one ofthe lads” without a feminist agenda which was interpreted as an attack on women who don’t want to be objectified and who routinely have to defend their position as equals even in the atheist arena. Mallorie - you came across as THAT GIRL who no woman wants around their boyfriend. The girl who strives to be desired. Accessable and therefore a threat - even to educated, self proclaimed logical thinkers. Women understand that alot of men can be distracted by the wiles of the unscrupulous minx!

I looked at the sonogram. Didn’t change anything. I already knew I was pregnant and I wanted to terminate. I felt curious about the whole thing, under the assumption(and fervent prayer) that this would never happen again. So I looked, for science!

Thanks Tad (4), you totally said what I wanted to say! I went to a very liberal and heavy lgbt college, and I never understood why same-sex oriented/same-sex roommates were not considered!

I enjoyed listening to you talk about sexism within the Atheist community. This annoys me to no end. I’m not in a relationship, and I don’t want one right now. When I go to atheist events, though, I get surrounded by guys who want an atheist girlfriend. I’ve tried casual dating. I go on one date with a guy and he assumes we’re “in a relationship” Facebook-style because he really wants an atheist girlfriend. It seems like if I am the least bit friendly, hypersensitive guys think “oh, she must be interested in me.” I got a super-creepy anonymous gift this Valentine’s Day from someone who apparently knows where I live. I go to our coffee meetups and get three or four guys trying to vie for my attention like I’m the belle of the ball. It’s so hard to find genuine friends in my area’s atheist community because of this. There aren’t a lot of older married people in my area’s groups, and most of the young single women don’t come to events because they get hordes of guys hitting on them. The last time I went to a meetup, I asked a guy to pass some cups down the table, and he said “You know, if you want to be taken seriously as a woman, you shouldn’t rely on men to do everything for you.” I know that not all atheist guys are assholes, but that comment was the last straw. I’m taking a break from atheist groups for now. I’m just so frustrated and disgusted.

Watcha, great blog post. You offer up a few fascinating pieces of information here that got me thinking some of the facts you’ve raised. I am not convinced that I absolutely see eye to eye with what you’ve stated nonetheless I enjoyed looking at your post. I think I’ll have to bookmark and come back again soon. Once again, credit for the thought provoking post. I hope you carry on with more superb posts like this one. Take Care.
